How Hard Water Affects a Boiler

If you use a boiler to heat your home throughout the most bitterly cold time of the year, then you don’t need us to tell you just how successful an endeavor this can be. Boilers are not as popular as they are, after all this time, by chance. They are efficient, effective, and highly durable home heating systems. However, this does not mean that you can expect your boiler to be completely problem free. A boiler is a mechanical system, and all mechanical systems are subject to operational problems from time to time. Hard water is water that has a higher than usual mineral content. While hard water may not be harmful to you directly, it can cause a number of problems with your plumbing system and appliances using water, including your boiler. The minerals in the hard water can lead to scale building up within your boiler. You may notice that you hear a rumbling sound coming from your boiler. This could be the result of scale building up within the burner, and the water boiling to a rapid bubbling state. Of course, a noisy operation is hardly the only issue that you may encounter.

Your boiler will have to generate more and more heat in order to function effectively if there is a layer of scale within, which means that it is going to use more and more energy in heating home. As it does so, you are likely going to see the cost associated with heating your home spike. Plus, your system will suffer more wear and tear than it otherwise would, which can lead to an increased risk of damages.
