R-22 Phaseout: What You Need to Know

Monday, May 22nd, 2017

question-mark-badgeIf you have a basic understanding of how your air conditioner in Washington, D.C. works, then you understand that the refrigerant in your system plays a vital role in the cooling process. Refrigerant is a heat transfer fluid that is evaporated in the indoor coil of your air conditioner. As the refrigerant evaporates, it draws heat out of the air surrounding and passing over the evaporator coil. The heat is released outside as the refrigerant is condensed, and the cycle continues until the desired temperature is met.

What you may not realize, though, is that “refrigerant” is an umbrella term covering many different heat transfer chemical blends. R-22 is one of the most common refrigerants used in air conditioning systems today. It is also being entirely phased out of use and production in accordance with the Clean Air Act of 2010. 2020 will mark the completion of the R-22 phaseout.

Consider a Split Air Conditioning System When Replacing Your Old Unit

Friday, June 6th, 2014

Installing a new air conditioner can be a serious undertaking, and you should always consider all of the options before pulling the trigger on a replacement system. Here in Arlington, air conditioning replacement services can discuss all of your options with you, including the installation of an alternative system like a ductless mini-split system. Depending on the circumstances, you may wish to seriously consider a split air conditioning system when replacing your old unit. Here’s a brief discussion of the advantages of such a move.

As suggested by their title, ductless mini-split systems don’t rely on ducts spreading out from a central unit. Instead, they involve the installation of numerous individual units inside your home. Each one is designed to cool off a specific area (usually a single room). That allows you to tailor the temperature in each room as you wish, and to turn off the air in parts of the home you aren’t using. This is far more efficient than a centralized system, and can potentially save you a great deal of money on monthly bills.

The question becomes whether that savings is enough to offset the cost of installing a ductless mini-split unit, and possibly abandoning your existing duct system in the process. That could actually be a benefit if your duct system has run into problems. Installing a new ductless system may be easier and more cost-efficient than trying to repair extensive damage to an existing system, and the flexibility afforded by a ductless system can further sweeten the pot. You might also consider a ductless system if you have a particularly large house, only part of which you use in the day. The ductless system can help you save a great deal on monthly expenses over the years… perhaps even enough to offset the cost of installation.

We’re based in Arlington, air conditioning replacement is our specialty, and we can provide a whole range of options based on your particular circumstances.

Alexandria, VA AC Guide: Air Conditioning Replacement Options

Monday, March 11th, 2013

If you’re in the market for air conditioning replacement in Alexandria, VA, there are many different options. You can upgrade to a more efficient AC system, or you can choose to switch to a different system entirely. It all depends upon your cooling needs, your home, and your budget. However, the most important aspect of any air conditioning replacement is the quality of the workmanship. Without professional consultation and installation, your new air conditioner may disappoint you. When you need to talk to a pro about your air conditioning replacement options in Alexandria, VA, call Polar Bear Air Conditioning and Heating.

Let’s look at some of your options for replacing your current AC:

  • Central Air Conditioning. A classic split system is perhaps the most popular kind of AC system. Not only are they cost-effective, but they reduce heat and noise by placing your condenser and compressor in an outdoor unit. This allows your home to cool that much faster. Central air circulates cool air through an extensive system of ductwork and into your living spaces. Whether you already have ductwork, or need an efficient and cost-effective cooling solution, consider a central air conditioning replacement.
  • Heat Pump. A heat pump works similarly to a central AC system, but with one important difference. A heat pump transfers heat outside of your home during the heating season and transfers it indoors during the cooling season. It is a complete cooling and heating package. This can be paired with a digital or wireless thermostat to make sure it keeps your home comfortable no matter what the season.

Remember that how it is installed has a huge impact on how effectively your AC system works. Call Polar Bear Air Conditioning and Heating today for comprehensive Alexandria, VA air conditioning services, including installation, repair, and maintenance.
